Part One: By Jordan Kurtz, MA, LPC, Trauma Therapist in Denver

Journal prompts for trauma survivors focused on healing, resilience, and self-reflection

Welcome to part one of our series ‘Journal Prompts for Trauma Survivors’. Journaling can be a powerful tool for those of us seeking support as we heal from trauma. It provides a safe space for self-reflection, self-expression, and reconnecting with your inner resilience. By engaging in regular journaling practices, you can build trust in yourself, explore your emotions, and set intentions for a brighter future.

This blog provides various ideas for journal prompts and reflections specifically designed to support trauma survivors in healing from trauma.

Journal Prompts for Building Resilience After Trauma

a. Reflect on a time in your life when you showed remarkable strength or resilience. What were the circumstances and how did you overcome them? How can you draw upon that experience to inspire and motivate yourself in your current healing journey?

b. List three qualities or strengths within yourself that have helped you survive and navigate challenging times. How have these qualities supported you, and what are some ways you can continue to cultivate and nourish them?

c. Imagine yourself as a symbol of resilience. What image or metaphor comes to mind? Draw or describe it in detail. How does embodying this symbol make you feel? How can you incorporate it into your daily life to remind yourself of your resilience?

Journal Prompts for Trusting Yourself After Trauma

a. Reflect on moments when you trusted your intuition or made decisions that were true to yourself. How did it feel to trust yourself in those instances? What can you learn from those experiences to cultivate more trust in yourself moving forward?

b. Write a letter to your younger self, offering words of compassion and encouragement. Reflect on the challenges you faced and the resilience you demonstrated. What advice would you give your younger self to help them build trust and self-compassion?

c. What are three things you admire about yourself today? Explore your strengths, accomplishments, and personal growth. How can you acknowledge and celebrate these aspects of yourself more often? Envision telling your younger self about these admirable qualities. How does it feel? What’s it like for younger you to hear?

3. Journal Prompts to Set Intentions for the Future

a. Visualize your ideal future self, free from the impacts of trauma. What qualities, values, or experiences do you envision for yourself? Write a letter from your future self to your present self, describing the path you took to become that person and the lessons you learned along the way.

b. Identify one small, actionable step you can take today towards your healing and growth. How does committing to this step align with your values and intentions? How will it contribute to your overall well-being and resilience?

c. Reflect on the kind of support and resources you need on your healing journey. Consider trauma therapy, support groups, self-care practices, or any other avenues that resonate with you. Write down specific steps you can take to seek and embrace the support you deserve.

How Journaling Helps Trauma Survivors Heal

Journaling can be a transformative practice for trauma survivors, offering a safe and empowering space to reconnect with resilience, build trust in oneself, and set intentions for the future. It’s important to highlight that there is no right or wrong way to journal and that it’s also completely okay if journaling isn’t your thing.

Journaling is simply one tool of many to support you in reconnecting to yourself, strengthening your sense of autonomy, and furthering growth and transformation. If you do choose to journal, allow yourself the freedom to express your thoughts and emotions authentically and with as much self-compassion as you can tap into.
